Barnsley sign youngster Jason McCarthy

Jason McCarthy signs for Barnsley

Championship side Barnsley have today signed Jason McCarthy from Southampton on a three-year deal believed to be in the region of £200,000.

The 21-year-old defender spent the 2016/17 campaign on loan at Walsall in League One, playing every minute of league and cup action and scoring five goals on his way to being named as their Player of the Season.

McCarthy was also named as Player of the Season in the 2015/16 campaign when he made 39 appearances in all competitions for Wycombe Wanderers.

The young defender only made one senior appearance for Southampton in December 2014 against Crystal Palace.

The transfer has largely been met with disappointment by fans of the club, who had hoped that McCarthy would be on the verge of involvement with the first team next season. However, Southampton are likely to strengthen in defence this summer and with Jack Stephens already looking comfortable at Premier League level, McCarthy would have found first team minutes extremely hard to come by.

It seems like the club has decided to let McCarthy go for the good of his career and we wish him all the best.
