Claude Puel’s future remains unclear
Three weeks have passed since the curtain came down on the 2016/17 Premier League season and a cloud of uncertainty continues to linger over Claude Puel. The Southampton manager still has two years left on his contract, but after losing the backing of the fans due to his excessive rotation policy and negative approach, his future remains unclear.
The situation has not been helped by the Southampton board, who are yet to release a statement saying that Puel has their backing to continue as manager. That can only be because they are still considering their options. Former Borussia Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel, who left the German club at the end of the season, is rumoured to be one of the candidates that Southampton are currently in talks with.
Southampton will want the managerial situation sorted before the transfer window opens in July so that whoever is in charge can work with Les Reed to identify areas of the team to strengthen. If it’s also true that Puel fell out with several senior players at the club, then changing manager is an important step towards ensuring that the squad is settled and pulling in the right direction ahead of pre-season.
For those reasons, Southampton fans shouldn’t have too long to wait to find out who will be at the helm next season. But with the board yet to give a statement, it’s looking less and less likely that it will be Claude Puel.
